Mike’s father, Ed, played football at the Hampton Institute in the 60s and was a member of the Baltimore Colts, but he was absent in Mike’s life.
Mike Tomlin is the youngest of two brothers. He attended Denbigh High School in Virginia. He played football while in school as a wide receiver/ tight end. He graduated in 1990. Mike attended the College of William and Mary and continued to play in the same position. In 1994, he was selected for the All-Yankee Conference. Tomlin never made it to the pro NFL.

Tomlin worked as a coaching staff at Arkansas State University briefly before he was finally hired to train the defensive backs in 1997. In 2001, he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a defensive backs coach, working under the head coach, Tony Dungy. In 2006, he became the defensive coordinator of the Vikings after he was selected by the head coach, Brad Childress. After working with the Vikings and with just one season of experience as a defensive coordinator, Mike moved to the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 16th head coach on January 27th, 2007.
