Her father, Michael Braxton, was a clergyman in a Methodist church and worked at a power company, while her mother was an opera singer, a pastor in a Methodist church, and a beautician. Her mother’s father was also a pastor.

While she was studying at Bowie State University to become a teacher, Toni worked at a gas station. It was at this gas station she met William Pettaway Jr., who convinced her to go into music after he heard her sing.

In 1989, they got signed into Arista Records and released their debut single, Good Life, in 1990. Good Life didn’t perform well due to marketing issues, but it managed to gain little attention.
