She is the eldest sibling of The Braxtons—Michael, born in 1968; Traci Braxton, born in 1971; Towanda, born in 1973; Trina, born in 1974; and Tamar, born in 1977.

Her father, Michael Braxton, was a clergyman in a Methodist church and worked at a power company, while her mother was an opera singer, a pastor in a Methodist church, and a beautician. Her mother’s father was also a pastor.

While she was studying at Bowie State University to become a teacher, Toni worked at a gas station. It was at this gas station she met William Pettaway Jr., who convinced her to go into music after he heard her sing.


The Braxtons were formed in the late 1980s. The group was made up of Toni and her sisters—Traci, Towanda, Trina, and Tamar. In 1989, they got signed into Arista Records and released their debut single, Good Life, in 1990. Good Life didn’t perform well due to marketing issues, but it managed to gain little attention.
